Outreach
We are the hands and feet of Jesus,
reaching out in our church, our backyard, our community, and our world.
LOCAL OUTREACH
KidsGames Hudsonville Community
In 2010, Georgetown again partnered with other churches to bring KidsGames to the Hudsonville Fair Grounds. This summer's KidsGames was a 1-night event that had a Back-To-School theme. Families attended together, enjoyed a free meal, and kids participated in several activities. They played games, climbed a rock wall, enjoyed some inflatables, tried some crafts, and enjoyed a variety of stage events. Families could also tour an expo area that had community organizations and businesses--as well as free hair cuts and family photos. We had over 1,200 people attend, over 100 volunteers, and over 20 community business sponsors/participants for another great year!
Friendship/Welcome Bags
These bags can be found at the Welcome Center in the lobby. They are for sharing with your new neighbors as a welcome gift. Each bag contains information about our church, a community map, small gifts for both adults and children, and some candy.
Georgetown Christian Preschool and Learning Center (GCPLC)
This ministry provides childcare and preschool for children in our community.
GCPLC provides before and after school care during the school year for children pre-K through 5th grade. They also offer early childhood care for days pre-K and Kindergarteners are not in school. Georgetown Christian Preschool provides 3 year old (1 or 2 day classes) and 4 year old preschool (2 and 3 day classes). Infant childcare is new this fall as well, as part of this ministries continued desire to meet the needs of families in our community and provide for safe, quality, Christian care for children. Contact Deb Kennedy at 669-7300 for more information.
Food Distributions
Each month, we work with Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank (formerly called Second Harvest Gleaners of West Michigan) to bring a Mobile Food Pantry to our community. These
food distributions are scheduled for the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Blood Drives
We work with Michigan Community Blood Centers and host blood drives that will provide local hospitals with the blood that is always desperately needed. Our blood drives are on Mondays from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on the following dates: March 23, June 29, August 24, and October 26. Walk-ins are always welcome or you can sign up for a specific appointment time at the Welcome Center or by calling the church office.
Partnership with Love INC
We strive to reach out to our community by working alongside a local organization,
Love In The Name of Christ (Love INC) . We work with other area churches to provide back-to-school supplies and clothing for children in our community. Many of our members volunteer at Love INC in a variety of ways, as budget counselors, as thrift store volunteers, as drivers, with computer repair work, and through donations to name just a few.
Georgetown runs a Food Pantry in conjunction with Love INC and assists an average of 10-12 families per week with their grocery needs. Food drives at our church and in our neighborhood help supply groceries for our pantry and for some of the others that are part of the Love INC network.
Georgetown is excited to offer two new ministries, a Clothing Ministry and a Shoe Ministry, also in conjunction with Love INC. These referral based ministries will help families with specific needs (like items required to wear for a band concert) to seasonal needs (needing a winter coat or back-to-school set up). Donations of new or like new, consignment quality clothes and shoes can be brought to the church (to Micah's Ministry House located immediately on our 40th Avenue driveway) on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12-2 or to Love INC at any time during their business hours.
Please contact Love INC at 662-3000 if you need to learn more about how to receive assistance from the Food Pantry, Clothing Ministry, or Shoe Ministry.
Partnership with MI Works!
We are excited to partner with Michigan Works to be a SHARE Network Access Point. We will have trained volunteers available to help guests in their search for employment--from resume writing/submitting to online job searching to occassional training events. We are open on Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 and 6:00-8:30. If you are interested in volunteering for this, please contact the church office.
Special Offerings
Throughout the year, various items are collected to share with others in need. Church-wide we collect food at Thanksgiving for shelters in nearby downtown Grand Rapids. Baby items are collect for Bethany Christian Services as we remember the sanctity of life in January. Our Children's and High School Ministries have their own offering collections to support other groups and programs.
SERVICE
Service plays an important role at Georgetown, whether done individually, as families, or as a church. Children learn to begin serving as part of the Children's Ministries (Kingdom Kids, GEMS/Cadets, Turning Point). Our High Schoolers participate in a wide variety of serve projects, including recent trips to places like Lake City, MI, Brooklyn, NY, Chicago, IL, and Guatemala (summer 2010). Adults of all ages serve through our church and through other community organizations.
Annually, members of Georgetown participate in a church-sponsored serve project, often in an area where our missionaries work. In the past few years, we have served in the Dominican Republic, in Guinea, in Mexico, and in Honduras. In 2006, we stayed closer to home and sending several groups to Mississippi to assist with the hurricane recovery/repair efforts. In 2008, we helped send a High School group to West Virginia. In 2009, we sent a group of 25 people to Guatemala with
Paradise Bound Ministries and they built 4 homes and conducted 2 village medical clinic days. In July 2010, we plan to send a group to work in Inez, KY with Appalachia Reach Out.
Financial support is available through the Individual Serve Fund, based upon Georgetown's
Individual Serve Fund Policy. Georgetown members interested in using the funds to help support a serve trip needs to submit a
Request for Serve Funds form to Terri Lubbers, Outreach Director. Requests are reviewed by the Outreach Team at their meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Please submit forms at least 1 week prior to the meeting whenever possible.
MISSIONARY SUPPORT
Through prayer, correspondence, and financial gifts, we support our missionaries in their work as they are serving their neighbors and sharing Jesus Christ.
When our missionaries are in the West Michigan, we plan special worship and hospitality events to strengthen our relationship with them and learn about what God is doing in the world through them. Our Small Groups can also partner with a missionary to more specifically strengthen the links between our members and the missionaries.
We have a Hospitality House that is available for our missionaries to use as a home away from home while they are in West Michigan.
By
Joining Hands In Prayer, our members receive the prayer requests and correspondence that our missionaries communicate with us. This gives our members the opportunity to pray specifically for them and the joys and struggles that they are currently experiencing.
